Dec. 26th, 2005 01:00 pmThere. The Christmas shopping was done. Ray wiped his hands with some satisfaction and sat back to look over the presents.
Peter was getting The New Dad's Survival Guide : Man-to-Man Advice for First-Time Fathers, Be Prepared : A Practical Handbook for New Dads, and Keeping The Baby Alive Until Your Wife Gets Home. Dana, after some extensive consultation with Winston's sister, was getting a gift box of sleep-related bath products with a note suggesting that she might want to slip some of them to Peter.
Kitt's present was several hardcover volumes of Joseph Campbell, most prominently The Hero With A Thousand Faces, but there was also a Ghostbusters company T-shirt and hat in there.
Bonnie's present also had the T-shirt and hat, but her books had titles like A Photographic History of General Motors, 1908-1999 (that one had a small inscription that said "I know it's cheating, but it's only cheating a little"), My Years with General Motors by Alfred Sloane, and 75 Years of Pontiac: The Official History, which has another 'sorry about the cheating' comment in it.
Eddie was the third to get the T-shirt and cap. His gift, however, had a copy of The Moral Warrior: Ethics and Service in the U.S. Military in it.
Tim's copy of the Spates Catalog of Otherworldly Denizens and Designations came with an apologetic note- I figure you probably know a bunch of this stuff already, if not most, but honestly, I couldn't think of what else to get you. Other than maybe a gift certificate to one of the more entertaining toy stores in my Manhattan, since gift certs don't work too well transdimensionally.
Ace? Ace's present was easy. Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook- Extreme Edition.
John Preston's present had taken a while for Ray to get into order. Fully loaded iPods were like that.
Snowball's present had been purchased in a hurry, only after the pig's gift to Ray had appeared on the Bar. It was a book entitled Self-sufficient Agriculture: Labour And Knowledge in Small-scale Farming . Thank Bezos for Amazon, really.
Barry's gift, on the other hand, had been more easily found. It had just taken a while to scare up baseball cards for every member of the St. Louis Cardinals for the past two or three seasons, then fit them into a binder.
Tahiri's present still made his hand cramp to think about, but between copying hers and Master Qui-Gon's out of English, Ray had had enough practice in Aurebesh to write the letterset in his sleep. The original book had been a somewhat elderly volume, but given its lack of planet-specific tech, In-door gardening for every week in the year: Showing the most successful treatment for all plants cultivated in the greenhouse, conservatory, stove, pit, orchid, and forcing-house would probably be more easily used than something up to date.
Guppy's book had taken some consideration, but eventually the guy at the Strand had recommended Dirty Dozen : 12 Nasty Fighting Techniques For Any Self-Defense Situation. So that was that.
Danny's present... well, Ray had promised him tech, and tech he got. There were PKE meters for each of his friends- he'd teach Danny to use them when he got the chance- but there was also an electronic copy of Tobin's Spirit Guide. Just because the reference material would probably turn out helpful somewhere down the line. There was also a note: I meant what I said about the teaching, you know. Whenever you're up for it.
The presents for Snow and the kids all matched: T-shirts, two for each, one in red and one in yellow. The shirts were printed with AUSTRALIAN INDOOR RULES QUIDDITCH: IT'S NOT A PROPER SPORT UNTIL THE MUGGLES HAVE TO WEAR GOGGLES. There was also a note saying 'I'm thinking either this week or just after New Year's, how about you?'.
And Romana's... well, that he reserved the right to give in person. He was not going to leave her gifts with the Bar.
