Certain sounds are ingrained into the cultural consciousness of most Americans. The most famous is the sound of a shotgun being racked. Less well-known, but still likely to cause a sudden onslaught of caution, is the sound of a safety being switched off. Tyler's pursuer isn't quite sure that's what he's hearing, but he's concerned enough that he slows and looks for cover.
