The door opens onto an alleyway between two buildings- one residential, one not. "Here we are," Ray says, stepping out and holding the Firehouse door open behind him. "Home sweet- uh, hang on a minute, I need to check the year."

He trots off to the newspaper box on the curb, then gives Kitt a thumbs-up.

"Quite," Kitt said, voice more than satisfied as the door opened for Ray's grip. Could cars purr? Kitt was making an effort at it. "It seems I, or someone like me, exist here. Or there is a possibility through second-hand tales. I don't dare test it just yet, but I do know the exclusive Knight Industries frequencies."

It could be done. But he wanted a few rumours of his own first.

"Oh, cool!" Ray said. "Did you want to keep looking, or did you need to do something else first, or should we just go back to the airfield now? I'm good with any of them at this point."

"Lessons are a bit more important than my following what may be a false lead. I've yet to run the image I found through my filters, but that can wait. I don't want to et off any alarms that may come from my presence. Though..."

Here, he got a bit cocky.

"Though if we caused a few rumors of our own, perhaps you could tell me if they contact you..."

Given how much of parapsychology was once founded on nothing but rumor, Ray saw nothing wrong with this. "Excellent idea, Kitt," he said with a smile. "Got anything in mind?"

"I'll think of something, keeping in mind that I don't want you arrested," he said. "But I do believe that if I were to make enough rumour to reach that board, perhaps I, here, would find out about it."

"There's enough areas in Manhattan with public security cameras for us to do something that might attract interest," Ray said. "Or upstate New York if you think Dutchess or Ulster County is a better choice for staging this kind of thing. That's highway driving and mostly rural territory, except for a few places like the Culinary Institute and a couple of relatively secret information technology company installations."

"I'll have to find a situation, first," he said. "A turboboost over a potential accident would be suitable, I think. Of course, it would need to be later on, so I can get the action off of police radar as quickly as possible afterward."

Because he wouldn't get Ray in trouble for the sake of intraspecies communication.

"I'm sure you understand."

"Shouldn't be a problem," Ray says. "We can get onto the BQE and head for the Triborough instead of going straight back to the Firehouse- there's always plenty of potential accident situations along that stretch of highway."

Oh, he understand, all right. Although- "Uh, is there any chance you can darken your windows when we do? People know what I look like."

"You are something of a local celebrity," said Kitt. "Of course. But they will likely see us heading toward the Firehouse, unless you'd like me to drop you off elsewhere so you can walk. That would depend on just what I did, of course."

"Well, it's not that much of a problem, actually," Ray says. "If we head for the Triborough, we're going north almost to the other end of Manhattan Island. That puts us out around 125th Street, and the Firehouse is clear past Canal. That's a good ten miles off and an entire river away from any jumps that might happen. If we can throw off anyone who's following us, nobody's going to associate the perfectly sedately moving black car in Manhattan with the one that was spotted in Queens."

"And I can certainly throw off pursuers." Kitt was very good at that. Extremely. It was what he was built for.

"But first, would you prefer to continue your lessons, or is there something else on your mind?"

"Mmmm... let's go back to the lessons," Ray decided. "I"m good otherwise, thanks."

The engine fired, giving a beautiful rumble. "Then let's return to the airfield. I think it's best we have our lessons there until you're more ready for real-life application."

Ray beamed. "Fine with me," he said, and wiped his hands on his shirt before taking the wheel again.

Kitt let Ray guide him out into traffic with a quiet confidence in his competence. Ray had already proven that.

(( Hmm... Egon's a high-energy physicist by training, so anything to do with that or particle physics or other such branches of the science would be just fine. As would discussion of the drive systems Kitt has, since Egon would be very interested in how you got that damn much energy out of a gasoline molecule. And he might be persuaded to do a philosophical argument about AI and souls if need be. ))
