Foliage Census itself and the characters of Dave O'Connell, Alphonse Jannot, and the genius retrieval team (the semi-competent ninjas) were taken from The Adventures Of Barry Ween, Boy Genius, by Judd Winick. So was the auburn-haired woman who appeared briefly in Team Spirit's thread.

Also in the Team Spirit thread was a sallow-skinned man with curly grey hair and thick round glasses; that was the local universe's live-action version of Waylon Smithers, in a nod to FX calling for someone to "release the hounds".

Assault Force K-Tilda encountered Milton, from Office Space, and Asok, from Dilbert. They also met up briefly with Alan, the programmer from Tron. The Bishop case was a reference to the 1992 movie Sneakers, as were O'Connell's mentions of the NSA and Professor Janek's chip.

Team Solid (as opposed to Team Spirit) encountered Mike Jittlov, the hero of The Wizard of Speed and Time. They also wound up with not one, not two, but three Egons Spengler- one from each Ghostbusters continuity. The blond one brought a dragon named Fido with him; Fido is, in fact, Real Ghostbusters canon, from the episode "Egon's Dragon".

Kitt, Divis Mal, and Obi-Wan Kenobi's encounter brought them face to face with Erwin "Whistler" Emory, from Sneakers.
