Fourth Arrival at Milliways + 10 Days
Milliways

Haven't had time to update this lately . .

It worked. The damned thing worked. I took it with me and Pete and Andrew and Romana out to Nevada and tested it, and it put off a PKE pulse sequence plain as the nose on my face. Didn't rip a hole in reality or anything, didn't summon the ghost of Teller (thank Oppenheimer for small favors!). Just did its pulse thing. We went back to Milliways and I set it up beside the lake and it was enough to show Tim the way back, so it accomplished both parts of its intended use. I gave him back the blood that I was using for a pattern backup, so now I have to test it without that, but that can wait- I mean, not that a PKE generation device isn't the most significant scientific discovery in the field of parapsychology since nearly ever, but I have bigger worries just at the moment. The biggest is that Pete kind of had a nervous breakdown and went booga-booga in the head for a couple of days. This place was too much for him, I guess- pretty much a nonstop diet of one-two punches to his everyday worldview, if you'll pardon mixing my metaphor- and he just lost it. I called in Dr. McCoy to help, and it did a little good, but didn't seem to get through much. I got him back to his room and stayed there as long as I could, but eventually I had to get out of there, so I went downstairs and. . . feh. I don't remember a whole lot of what happened after that. I know I woke up the next morning with a really phenomenal hangover and plans for proton assault cannons in my holocomputer, so it looks like I kept busy.

I'm going to be working a lot on the security system I'd been thinking of over the next few days.

Anyway. Pete started coming out of it yesterday. Turns out that the whole skeptic thing he has, is partly based in a chunk of his childhood I never knew about. His mom got institutionalized when he was five and never got out. Apparently she saw spirits, or said she did, and it got out of hand. He got into parapsych and psychology to try and set things right for her- and to prove he wasn't nuts either, poor guy. Between one thing and another I wound up running a really close PKE scan on him, with the meter from the animated continuum, and you know what? He's a source. A really, really low-level one, like the kind of thing you wouldn't notice if you didn't have the meter practically up his nose, but he's still a source. It's the spiritual equivalent of being the guy who accidentally puts out streetlights. I offered to build him an interference unit to cancel that out and get the ghosts off his back on busts, but he said no- doesn't wanna repress things any more. So there's that.

Got him eating again but I had to go to Tim's wedding right after, since Tim wanted me in the wedding party. We had to wear kilts. I guess it wasn't so bad, but it felt a little weird, especially when I had to sit down. Met a couple of interesting people at the party, though, including Wash (who's from a future I seem to remember Faith saying had a horribly devastated Earth) and a guy named John Smith. Wash likes dinosaurs, the same way I like technology- I mean, this guy is a dinosaur fanboy par excellence. I still had a bunch of photos from our bust at the AMNH a few months ago, so I started showing him and he wound up looking like my nephews the first time they got to see the tyrannosaurs. Someday I'll have to show him the security camera footage of Pete being chased by the Styracosaurus skeleton.

Mr. Smith, on the other hand, is a psychometric. I know this because he shook my hand and had a vision I can only conclude was of Mike Draverhaven escaping from the facility in Albany. I don't . . . I don't know what to think about that. I'm hoping it's not true, for reasons that should be obvious, but when Peter is better and un-Bound and I can leave again, the first thing I'm going to do when I step through that door is phone the facility and ask them whether he's still there or not. They owe me that much.

I hope Mr. Smith is wrong. I really do.

Anyway, that's about it for now, except that Asar-Suti seems to think I should be allowed into Eska's library of books on magic, which is kind of cool. I'm going to go get something to eat and see about getting the security system designs integrated, since some of the sensor systems are gonna be a little tricky to rig up.
