A door opens in the side of the old Hook and Ladder No. 8 building, and Ray stepped through. Holding the door open, he gestured for the others to follow him into the alley.
[OOC: Time runs in fits and starts in Ray's world compared to Milliways. At various intervals he's spent up to a week in his own world and found less than a day and a half went by in the Bar- so I'd say that this time, one of those fits did something similar, and Tony gets back in time.]
"I believe there was something about frequency checks?" Ray said, leading the merry gang around the corner to the human-sized door set into the big main one. He paused for a moment to touch one hand to the memorial plaque beside the door, then opened it and held it for the others. "Oh, looks like Winston's got her out for gas..."
"Frequency checks would be a good idea. Both of our frequencies are quite recognizable." He glances over to Tony. "If we split up, I don't mind giving you a ride." KARR smirked for a moment. "Just don't try to touch anything..."
"As long as we can keep in contact," Bonnie said, "we should be able to triangulate any position we need. That makes Tony and me with you, Karr, and Ray's already been driving with Kitt so it shouldn't be a problem, right guys?"
She stepped in, following Ray, and glanced around appreciatively. "Yeah. This'll definitely do. But I think we should start to the west - since they were last spotted in Pennsylvania, unless you've got any newer appearances, Ray."
"Nothing on the major newswires as of the last time I came to Milliways," Ray said. "Haven't had time to check the smaller sources or urban-legend Web sites. Okay, then- we'll head for New Jersey to start with."
He started wriggling out of the proton pack and jumpsuit. Yeah, people here were used to seeing him in them, but the last thing he wanted was unnecessary recognition right now.
Kitt nodded and, stepping away from the gathering - making sure to leave Karr room, of course - he transformed and began scanning. It was a careful process, even with him on surveillance mode. He didn't want to tip off his location until he was sure that he could be somewhere where property damage wouldn't be a factor.
"I'm sure we'd be able to outrun them, if they decided to come chasing us." He joined Kitt in stepping away from the group and taking car form. Judging by his scanner, he was glad to return to it. It slowed as he went into surveillance mode as well, mirroring Kitt's.
Bonnie glanced over at the both of them and nodded, going to open Karr's door. She placed her tire iron beside the driver's seat. "All right, let's see if we even need to split up at all. Between the two of you, we should have one heck of a coverage area."
She glanced at Karr's screens, the glance becoming an intent look.
Ray headed over towards Kitt. "We should be careful when we head for New Jersey," he noted. "There's cameras and EZ Pass transponders on every possible exit from this island. Fortunately you don't have to pay to get into Jersey, but still..."
"Kitt and Karr can probably take care of that," said Bonnie. "After all, if they can get the signal of the cameras and transponders, spoofing a readout is simple."
She shrugged, then climbed in, sitting easily in Karr's driver's seat. "All right, what's our readout?"
"Not to mention the fact that we can block our windows if we need to idea what the three of you look like." He paused for a moment as he continued scanning. "I'm picking up on a signal..."
"I've found found the sensor echoes of our telemetry as well. We should begin to the west and separate apart to get a clear triangulation." Or so Kitt said as he swung his door open for Ray. Already, his windows were tinting. He remembered Ray's preference, after all.
KARR-the KARR native to Ray's universe-was attempting to keep his nerves in check. It was rather difficult at the moment, given the fact that he'd not only picked up on telemetry echoes, but also got a message back. "Michelle! I have a response."
It didn't take long for him to send back, Your telemetry echoes mine. Explain.
Kitt was silent, but his scanner whispered regularly side to side as his engine started, waiting for Karr's word - Karr contacting Karr, after all. That made Karr their 'leader.'
He did, however, send a tracer back along the signal to get a precise position. On his screen, maps cycled.
Guess that meant he, KARR, and Bonnie were in the lead. Which was somewhat fine if they were attacked—although, Tony notes, he would have preferred to be on the sidelines. Ambush. Never send too many men out where they could get hurt.
…and the driver’s name was Michelle? He closes his eyes for a moment, hoping this will be a peaceful encounter. Because there’s another woman named Michelle who’d be none too pleased to get him back in two, three, four pieces.
"Thirty two miles away," both KARRs went to their respective drivers.
The KARR familiar to the group started his own engine, eager to start moving-but cuatiously. No point in getting himself killed, yet. "He's in Mahwah, New Jersey."
Back with Michelle, the other KARR's scanner picked up speed. "He hasn't responded yet."
Repeat-explain yourself.
It echoes yours because I happen to be the Knight Automated Roving Robot, the Milliways KARR snapped back.
Michelle stared at the instrumentation. "He did not just say that! Did he just say that?"
Back in Manhattan, Ray fidgeted in a fashion reminiscent of a small child with too much sugar. "Can you hear any of what's going back and forth, Kitt?" he asked.

He was beginning to feel more assured. All the better.

Date: 2005-08-05 02:15 am (UTC)The signal reaching Karr was- at best- intermittent, patchy. It had the hallmarks of a passive mode background scan. At least, it did at first.
And then it picked up on Karr. And it changed, very simply and clearly:
