The door opens, as has happened so many times before, onto a grey-walled alley. Ray pokes his head out and looks around. "Okay," he says. "We should be all right- come on out, guys."

Tidus looks up skeptically.

"So don't tell them."

The "I'm the summoner and I know what's best" tone never stops him from trying to convince her.

"Or don't take back, you know. Big things."

Tidus sees not reason Yuna couldn't hide--well, a hell of a lot, really, in her sleeves.

"If they find us with fresh-cooked food in the middle of the Mushroom Rock Road, they're going to know we went somewhere," she points out.

Yuna looks down at the dish of coiled noodles in sauce, and then back up at Tidus. "That's disgusting."

He grins.

"You're picky."

"Pockets full of noodles!"

Tidus is ridiculous and immature and there's no way anything could ever happen between them.

Crisis thusly averted, Yuna looks around for the waitress to get their check.

Tidus looks at her.

Tries not to laugh.

And points out, "You can put it in a container," before pulling some of the bills from Bar out and looking through them.

Shut up, Tidus. "They have numbers on them," she says. "Here, I'll do it." She fishes out her own money.

Tidus is just smirking.

And draining the glass again. Get all he can before they go!

The check is kind of alarming, for Yuna; the exchange rate is not as good as she might have hoped.

Also, tipping does not exist in Spira.

Thankfully, it does in Zanarkand, and Tidus leaves a few of the smaller bills on the table as he opens the door (gallant, he thinks, that's what he is, whereas certain maesters are slimey) for Yuna.

And they're walking again, Yuna once more pulling up her hood against the sleet.

She really likes this coat, she finds. She also finds she doesn't have anything to say, so she just walks along, humming to herself.

She does not take Tidus's hand. It's all weird, now.

It's kinda weird.

But he's in a good mood anyway, and grinning.

And whistles after a few minutes, a little in tune with Yuna's humming.

He does not take her hand.

But he does look at her out of the corner of his eye.

Subconsciously, Yuna picks up on the whistling, and her humming gets a little bit louder and quite a bit closer to in-tune.

It's quite consciously that she notices him watching her, and deliberately looks away and off to the side and up a little, in the traditional female "I am very blase and do not notice you noticing me, but isn't this a good profile for me?" position.

Yevon forbid Tidus does not notice and grin a little more.

And keeps whistling and okay, fine, it's a nice profile for her. Yep.

And if she's going to show it it's only fair to appreciate it, right?

Right. Obviously.




Shit. He's gonna get eaten by a giant kittyman.

For the moment, though, he just takes her hand and keeps whistling. Casually. It is casual-hand-taking and casual-whistling both.

She freezes a little, when he does, because--she was trying to nip any possible... anything.. in the bud. Right? Right. And she thought it was working.

Maybe it did work and this is the kind of natural, unself-conscious handholding like before. Yes.

She slows to look in a shop window, and when their arms first stretch and then their hands begin to part, her fingers tangle in his.

He was grinning.

Now he's just smiling, and enjoying the way the rings on her fingers rub against his--

Oh hell.

He's in trouble. He's in big trouble, Tidus realizes, and firmly doesn't think on that, just looks in the window with her.

"Man, everything's all--covered," he decides on, after a moment of looking at clothes on mannequins, "here."

It is, admittedly winter.

"I think it looks nice," says Yuna, who habitually wears enough fabric for two New York girls or eight Spirans.

"You look nicer in what you wear at home," he informs her absently.

"I don't know, it covers an awful lot," she says, a teasing mask. "Or do you really like the upper arms and not care about the rest?"

Underneath: he said home.

Tidus stops.





"--I can't answer that one right now matter how I do, huh?"

"No," she says, sounding very satisfied with herself, and allowing their pace to pick up slightly.

Tidus, in a great act of maturity, makes a face at her.

Yuna deigns not to notice this.

As they pass the blocks, vaguely headed back towards the rezndevous point, Yuna does quite a bit of window shopping, but they're within a block or two of the Empire State Building again before she comes to a complete stop.


"Oooh. Let's go in this one," she says, peering first in the window and then up at the sign. (Macy's.)

"Okay." He's not picky.

He is energized, still, and feels he could walk much farther, but this store works if Yuna wants it.
