The door opens, as has happened so many times before, onto a grey-walled alley. Ray pokes his head out and looks around. "Okay," he says. "We should be all right- come on out, guys."

Mischief is probably not an expression Tidus is used to seeing on the Lady Summoner's face, but it's unmistakable as she furtively looks around the dining room and then hops up into the enormous chair, swinging her legs.

And grins.

"Not breaking?"

"I don't think it's glass," she says thoughtfully, pressing one fingertip against the material.

There's a waitress, with menus, and she's clearing her throat.

"Huh?"

And then he's flashing a smile at the waitress.

"Hi! Um. We were hoping to grab a bite to eat?"

Yuna slips out of the chair and tries very hard to create the impression that she was never, actually, in it, as the waitress leads them to much less interesting seating. "Can I get your drinks to start off?"

"Um? Just water, I guess?" Yuna says. She discreetly tries to make sense of the menu.

Tidus is sick of water.

"Something sweet?"

The waitress looks at him blankly. "Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Fanta Orange, Fanta Grape, or Dr. Pepper?"

"...Uuuh."

Yes, right, from Zanarkand, Lady Summoner! Very high-tech! Star of the Zanarkand Abes! Unable to order a drink!

"Pepsi," he decides, going with the first.

The waitress swishes away to get the drinks, and Yuna peers at the menu in earnest.

"I can't read this," she whispers. "I mean--I can, but it's too slow. How can I pick something?"

He glances down.

Glances up.

"--I...don't think I'd know what anything was if I could read it. We could just point at things?"

The waitress returns quickly--it's between rushes, and they have the place almost to themselves.

"Excuse me," Yuna says, and then she's distracted by staring at Tidus's drink, which seems to be alive or something. "I mean--excuse me, do you have any vegetarian dishes?"

"Sure," the waitress says. "We can make any of them without the fish sauce. How about the vegan pad thai?"

"Okay!" Yuna agrees hastily. She'll be happy if it doesn't have little balls of tapioca floating in it.

"I'll have that too," he decides, and eyes his drink warily.

Tidus takes the wrapper off the top of the straw that's already in it and takes a small sip.

And immediately starts choking at the fizzing argh the fizzing the fizzing in his nose.

...And also thinking that that wasn't half bad, choking to death aside.

"What in Yevon's name is that?!" Yuna whispers across the table. "You are not allowed to make fun of bubble tea anymore."

"I don't know!"

He's done coughing and more prepared, now, as he takes another drink.

And then a longer one.

"...Yuna, you need to try this!"

"You like it?"


"At least I didn't like the bubble tea!" She eyes it. "It's moving."

"It's great. Come on, try it."

Yuna is not enthusiastic.

"It's too sweet! And it burns. Ew. Ew." She gulps some water, bumping herself in the nose with the lemon slice.

"It's great!" he repeats in protest and starts slurping at it again.

"Man, you think we can get this in the bar?"

Yuna thoughtfully removes the lemon wedge from her glass rim and begins to squeeze juice in.

"I don't know," she says, making a face. "It can't be good for you."

"You drank tea with tiny Sin spawn in it," he points out and cheerfully swishes the ice cubes around with his straw.

This is Yuna's incensed face.

"Yours moves! On its own!"

"Mine doesn't chok--only choked me once!"

The waitress rolls her eyes, plunking down two bowls of spicy noodles.

"Just kiss already," she mutters as she walks away.




And now we're blushing.

Tidus will join her in blushing. Not near as much, thankfully, and he's tan enough what is there is harder to notice.

But he'll also grin. A little.

And--

Wakka would kill him.

Lulu would fry him.

He's not sure Kimarhi might not eat him

He's sneaking a look at her over their noodles anyway.

Yuna is studying her noodles! Thoroughly! A lot!

Chopsticks; twirl twirl twirl.

(There's so much he doesn't know about her world, about her, and it wouldn't be fair to him. And there's Lulu, and Auron, and what they'd say, and they'd be right, because her pilgrimage is important, the most important thing, and anyway it wouldn't be fair to him, and anyway if she were going to--anything--there's Lord Seymour, too, a maester and a great summoner and --and she never, never expects to, never expected to--)

Bite. Chew. Swallow.

"It's good," she says, her voice high and a little strained.
